"Be the energy you want to attract" ~ Unknown
Skiing in ill fitting ski boots, destroying my tendons, requiring bilateral surgeries, of which one unfortunately led to a spiraling infections. After 6 years of chronic infection and pain, I chose to have my left leg amputated below the knee. Due to a delay in my healing process, I had an additional challenge for me - being patient. I was frustrated because all I wanted was to get moving. Days turned to weeks, then weeks turned to months. The thought of becoming active again was something I had waited so long for. Setting a goal was something to focus on. So, I signed up to run the Boston Athletic Association 5k prior to being healed or even receiving my first prosthetic.
This race meant more to me than running, it provide me the HOPE I needed to progress through recovery. It meant every step forward would bring me closer to my goal. For some, this transition time can be extremely difficult.
The emotion and passion I found for running as I trained on one leg created a power within myself I never knew I had. Completing that first 5k was incredible. The 45 minutes it took to reach the finish was irrelevant. I was able to START.
After years of being on the sidelines, I was able to experience the joy in crossing that finish line; hearing a cheering crowd, accompanied by friends and family. It was a surreal moment. Having that goal to aid in my recovery was life changing.
Returning to or trying new activity is exciting. Not only through my experience, but what I learned from others though this journey, I have discovered the post-rehab process can be challenging, expensive and incredibly isolating. In addition, often insurance runs out prior to rehab goals being completed.
Now through Finish Line Adaptive, I hope to assist others bridge the process in their transition. I look to increase the education, awareness and bring more attention around the effects of social isolation to those that can't or don't get out or have the opportunity to try new things, thus reducing their mobility. Whether you are looking to try a new adaptive sport, try running, or just looking to use a new piece of specialized prosthetic equipment; Stepping outside of your comfort zone and establishing your goals to find to your "finish line" is the most important step.
Let's do it together, reach out for support, be the power to inspire others, and let's always remember to give back to our communities. "Be the energy you want to attract".
